Only four unlisted funds closed last year, raising a combined $300 million for investing in the mining sector. That's down from $2.5 billion in 2018 and nowhere near the peak of 2012, when eight funds procured a combined $4.2 billion

.@Incrementum just published the In #Gold We Trust Report, the gold standard in gold research @IGWTReport
Incrementum just published the In Gold We Trust Report, the gold standard in gold research.
Key Takeaways
• Monetary policy normalization has failed
We had formulated the failure of monetary policy normalization as the most likely scenario in our four-year forecast in the In Gold We Trust report 2017. Our gold price target of > USD 1,800 for January 2021 for this scenario is within reach.
• The coronavirus is the accelerant of the overdue recession
The debt-driven expansion in the US has been cooling off since the end of 2018. Measured in gold, the US equity market reached its peak more than 18 months ago. The coronavirus and the reactions to it act as a massive accelerant.
• Debt-bearing capacity is reaching its limits
The interventions resulting from the pandemic risk are overstretching the debt sustainability of many countries. Government bonds will increasingly be called into question as a safe haven. Gold could take on this role.
• Central banks are in a quandary when it comes to combating inflation in the future
Due to overindebtedness, it will not be possible to combat nascent inflation risks with substantial interest rate increases. In the medium-term inflationary environment, silver and mining stocks will also be successful alongside gold.
• Dawn of a new monetary world order
In the decade that has just begun, trend-setting monetary and geopolitical upheavals are to be expected. Gold will once again play an important role in the new monetary world order as a stateless reserve currency.
• New gold all-time highs are only a matter of time
The question is not whether the gold price will reach new all-time highs, but how high these will be. We are convinced that gold will prove to be a profitable investment over the course of this decade and will provide stability and security in any portfolio.

Eric #Sprott’s Investment Spree in #Gold & #Silver #JuniorMining Co.’s Continues
Oreninc published an update to Eric Sprott’s investment spree in the junior mining space.
He’s invested another C$69.3 million in August and September to bump his total to $176.7 million.
“Since Oreninc first wrote about his investment blitz at the end of July Sprott has since invested $20.1 million in Jaguar Mining, $12.0 million in Chesapeake Gold, $6 million in Amarillo Gold, $5.0 million in Kootenay Silver as well as investments in Benchmark Metals, Freegold Ventures, Aftermath Silver, Stroud Resources, Kore Mining, Excellon Resources, Dolly Varden Silver, Pure Nickel, Stuhini Exploration, American Creek Resources and Teuton Resources.
“While the majority of his investments are in gold juniors, with the silver price starting to show signs of life, Sprott has invested in five silver juniors since the start of August and ten since May, as well as two nickel companies”

Will #Gold Companies cease their underperforming status?
Shares in gold miners have massively underperformed the S&P 500 index over the past three years, falling 6 per cent, according to the VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF, compared with a 43 per cent rise for the US benchmark.
Longer term, gold miners have massively underperformed the gold price by a large margin, returning a negative 32 per cent over the past 10 years, compared with a 39 per cent positive return for the SPDR Gold Shares, the largest gold-backed ETF.
Miners' shares lose their shine
Gold groups should be enjoying a boom. Geopolitical tensions such as trade wars or Iranian sabre-rattling usually send investors flocking to the yellow metal. But in Canada, the traditional centre for the gold-mining industry, cannabis has instead caught investors' eyes.
The most traded stock in the first quarter by volume on the Toronto Stock Exchange was Aurora Cannabis, while Barrick Gold, the world's second-largest gold miner, languished in fifth place.
This lack of interest in the precious metal can be gauged by the drop off in the amount of money being raised by junior miners in Canada, which hit a record low this year at C$635m, according to Oreninc, which tracks the industry.

We take a look junior performance in Canada, versus seniors, through research provided by Richard Schodde over at Minex Consulting.
Author: Kip KeenPosted: Tuesday , 26 Nov 2013 HALIFAX, NS (MINEWEB) -
In a recent presentation Richard Schodde over at Minex Consulting draws a striking picture of the performance of juniors and seniors in mineral exploration in Canada and abroad. We thought it worthwhile sharing a few of his graphs (with his permission) that draw a clear picture of the importance of juniors in the Canadian exploration scene.
The summary statistic is this. Since 1960 juniors spent about $61 billion on exploration in Canada - 36 percent of the total exploration spend - and made about 45 percent of total discoveries, Schodde says.
Here we see the raw spending, seniors versus juniors:
In recent decades it's apparent that junior spending has skyrocketed, a fact that can in part be attributed to the increasing power of the personal computer. Bare bones companies, starting in the 1980s could compete with majors in the exploration game.
Discoveries followed the money:
We see that juniors made many of Canada's discoveries in recent decades, indeed, most of them in the past 10 years. Often exploration is a fruitless task, however. You spend money and find nothing and this is evident Schodde's overall ratio of total exploration spend to the value of discoveries. For juniors this was 0.89.
Typically, it's the rare, major discoveries that make for massive returns (though not only). This is evident in the next graph where Tier 1 discoveries - big ones - drive Schodde's estimates of discovery value far above what was spent. Juniors in the past decade have ruled this roost (yellow bars=value created, red line=spending) making most of the big discoveries.
Where do we go from here? Metal prices dominate the exploration cycle in Schodde's analysis (though there are other contributing factors) and he extrapolates future exploration spending in a variety of gold price scenarios. His general sentiment: the sky isn't falling. Taking $1,200 an ounce gold, he forecasts exploration spend to average about $1.3 billion a year in Canada in the coming years. That's well off 2012, a banner year. But historically speaking, it's still quite a healthy level.
